Every order channel you run ends up in the same place: a cook, a ticket, and a clock. The kitchen display is where a restaurant technology stack either comes together or falls apart into four beeping tablets.

What is a kitchen display system?

A kitchen display system (KDS) is a screen in the kitchen that replaces printed dockets. Orders appear as live tickets, each item routed to the station that cooks it, with a timer running from the moment the order was placed. Cooks bump items as they finish, and the system tracks what is still open, what is aging, and what is ready to pass.

The reason to move off paper is not the paper. It is that a printed ticket cannot tell you it has been sitting for eleven minutes, cannot be split between the tandoor and the fry station, and cannot be un-printed when the guest cancels.

Every channel, one screen

The failure mode this solves is specific and familiar: a delivery tablet for each marketplace, a printer for the counter, and someone whose job during the rush is to watch all of them and retype.

In ThaliPOS, orders from the counter, the self-order kiosk, QR at the table, your web storefront and the delivery marketplaces all arrive on the same kitchen display, on your menu, with the channel marked on the ticket. There is nothing to retype and nothing to reconcile afterwards.

Each item is assigned to a station in the menu, and appears on that station's screen. A ticket with a biryani and a dessert shows up in two places, and the pass sees both.

A physical bump bar works alongside the touchscreen, because a cook with oil on their hands should not be poking a screen.

This is a quiet moment with one ticket open. During service the same board fills station by station, and the elapsed timers are what stop a ticket getting stranded while faster ones go past it.

Why the language setting is not a nice-to-have

A ticket in English slows down a cook who thinks in Tamil. Not because they cannot read it, but because reading it costs a beat, and a beat per ticket across a Friday service is real time — and the errors it causes are on the plate, not on the screen.

What is the difference between a KDS and a kitchen printer?

A printer produces a static ticket. A kitchen display system shows live tickets with timers, routes each item to the station that cooks it, supports batch cooking and refire, and updates when an order is changed or cancelled. You can run both — ThaliPOS drives standard ESC/POS printers alongside the display.

Which languages does the kitchen display support?

English, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Bengali and Urdu, set per station so each screen shows the language that station reads.

Do delivery orders appear on the kitchen display?

Yes. DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub orders arrive on the same screen as counter, kiosk, QR and web orders, with the channel marked on the ticket.

Does the kitchen display need the internet?

No. It runs against the in-store hub on your local network, so tickets from the counter and kiosk keep arriving during an internet outage.

Can I use a physical bump bar?

Yes. Bump bars are supported alongside the touchscreen through the same hardware layer as printers, drawers, scanners and scales.
